- Hospitation
What is Hospitation?
Hospitation is a training period during which a doctor spends time at a German hospital.
According to the law, doctors are not allowed to touch patients but can observe how other doctors work and participate in medical discussions. However, some hospitals may permit simple tasks, such as drawing blood, and even allow access to the operating room, especially if the doctor demonstrates commitment by attending regularly and making an effort to learn.
Second: Why do doctors apply for training at German hospitals (Hospitation)?Hospitation is often used by doctors to apply for a German D visa, which allows them to stay for more than three months.
This enables doctors to continue studying the German language, get to know German society, familiarize themselves with the healthcare system in Germany, look for job opportunities, and apply for a medical practice license (Approbation).
What are the requirements for getting a Hospitation invitation from a hospital?
There are no clear-cut requirements, as they vary from hospital to hospital and from one department head to another. When contacting German hospitals to request a Hospitation invitation, it’s advisable to mention your financial status, such as a scholarship or a blocked bank account, to let the hospital know they are not financially responsible for you.
It is also helpful to indicate your level of German language proficiency. However, even if your language skills are still basic, it is worth trying, as some hospitals may not require a specific language level.
Additionally, some hospitals offer language courses or activities to help you learn the language.
Tips during the Hospitation period Commitment to attendance and good behavior: Your behavior during the Hospitation period can significantly impact the future of other applicants from your country who apply to the same hospital. A positive impression may increase the chances for others, while a negative impression could lead to rejection.
Take advantage of the opportunity to learn medical language and practice writing medical reports:
During this period, you will not be held accountable for language mistakes in writing or speaking.
If you neglect these skills, they may become a major obstacle when you start working.
Hospitation can also be a valuable opportunity to secure a job at the same hospital if you prove your competence and the hospital needs doctors.
Your main priorities during this period should be preparing yourself for two important things:
Securing a job position (Stelle).Applying for a medical practice license (Approbation).
